Un área de México tiene algunas condiciones similares a las de Marte

Las estructuras sedimentarias de los organismos resistentes a los ambientes extremos que se encuentran en las piscinas de Cuatro Ciénegas Coahuila (CCC) se desarrollarían en un ambiente similar al encontrado en Marte.

Los llamados estromatolitos, con aspecto de piedra, están formados y desarrollados por la actividad de las poblaciones microbianas, que se encuentran en las piscinas o manantiales de Cuatro Ciénegas. Estos son sitios que son pobres en nutrientes (como se espera en Marte) y ricos en minerales similares a los del planeta rojo.

Una de las investigaciones más relevantes sobre el tema es la de la ecóloga evolutiva de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Valeria Souza, quien ha realizado estudios sobre el genoma de las comunidades bacterianas que pueden subsistir con escasos nutrientes en los pozos. de Cuatro Ciénegas.

Para Souza Saldivar y su equipo, las características de los humedales en CCC son un modelo terrestre adecuado para lo que se podría buscar en Marte. Aquí hay casi 300 piscinas, algunas lagunas y ríos en los humedales. Por esta razón, se refieren a CCC como un laboratorio natural para la astrobiología, porque allí se puede estudiar un entorno primitivo con condiciones marcianas similares.

En palabras de Paola Molina Sevilla, profesora de ciencias de la Tierra, un “análogo marciano (es) un sitio en la Tierra cuyas condiciones ambientales, características geológicas, atributos biológicos o una combinación de estos, se aproximan de alguna manera a los esperados u observados en Marte .

El estudio de los entornos analógicos marcianos en la Tierra permite la simulación de experimentos y misiones que luego se ejecutarían en el sitio objetivo y servirían como base para resolver las incógnitas del planeta rojo.

Las dificultades que surgen en estos entornos se pueden resolver más prácticamente aquí, que a 225 millones de kilómetros de distancia (separación promedio entre el tercer y cuarto planeta del sistema solar según la NASA).

Tanto en Cuatro Ciénegas como en el Cráter Gale, donde el robot Curiosity explora el planeta rojo, el yeso se formó por la acción del fuego bajo el agua. Souza Saldivar, un científico mexicano que ha trabajado con la NASA estudiando comunidades bacterianas, enfatiza la importancia de preservar la CCC.

Porque si hay vida en Marte o en otros planetas, y esa vida persiste hoy, el estudio de la vida en sitios antiguos con escasos nutrientes puede indicar qué buscar y cómo interpretar esos datos. Por otro lado, Molina Sevilla también advierte que hay procesos en la superficie de Marte para los cuales no hay analogía con los de la Tierra.

“No todos los análogos actuales son apropiados para todas las pruebas que se llevan a cabo en preparación para una misión”.

Según una clasificación de Jeffrey Marlow (2008), existen análogos químicos que se refieren a la composición del suelo y los regolitos marcianos, como el pH o la composición mineralógica. Mecánico, sobre la fuerza, la cohesión y la fricción en la superficie (útil para el desarrollo de robots y el diseño de sus neumáticos).

Análogos físicos sobre el tamaño del suelo, la densidad, la porosidad o el contenido de agua (para conocer el pasado y el presente de la interacción agua-suelo, o cómo reaccionaría ante el traje de un astronauta). Magnético, para comprender la susceptibilidad y la saturación magnética. Ambientes orgánicos análogos, para proporcionar datos sobre la esterilidad del suelo (útil para detectar la vida o rastros de moléculas de interés biológico).

Otro ambiente marciano análogo que se destaca en la Tierra es el desierto de Atacama en Chile, un sitio hiperárido que se extiende a más de 200,000 kilómetros desde la frontera con Perú en el norte de Chile hasta Copiapó. Un lugar totalmente estéril donde se sugiere que la zona más árida ha permanecido así durante más de diez a quince millones de años; según Rafael Navarro-González, doctor en Astrobiología.

También lo son el desierto de Mojave y la llanura de Panoche, ambos en California; los valles secos de la Antártida; el río Tinto y el sistema hidrotermal Jaroso, ambos en España; el desierto de La Joya en Arequipa, Perú; Saltem Skov en Dinamarca; y basalto de las islas hawaianas; según Marlow.

Una Carta Abierta Para Mi Hija Aleika

Aleika, eres mi princesa, que con sonrisas me inspiras cada amanecer. Eres quien de pensamientos llenas mi mente, para recortar mi día y a casa regresar.

Tu belleza y pureza son mi debilidad y con sólo una mirada haces mi corazón derretir. De mi alma te has vuelto dueña y alegras mi existir tan sólo con pensar en ti.

Vas creciendo muy de prisa. Como quisiera detenerte y darle tiempo al tiempo.

Te volteo a ver y eres como las flores del jardín que se han vestido de belleza y esplendor. Eres mi paloma mensajera que el Señor mandó del cielo para hablarme de Su eterno amor.

Algún día te irás de casa y entre lo mas valioso te llevaras un pedazo de mi vida. Mientras tanto quiero darte el amor de Dios, guiarte en Sus senderos y enseñarte cada día Su importancia y Su valor.

No estamos solos. Tenemos un ejemplo a seguir, tu madre.

Bethssy es la personificación de lo que significa amar incondicionalmente y al mismo tiempo ser paciente. Ella es la forma de vida más hermosa y meticulosamente diseñada que Dios tenia para mi. Es amable y cariñosa, poderosa e inquebrantable, encantadora y carismática. Ella me ha hecho un mejor hombre y me ha dado el mejor regalo que uno puede pedir, tu.

Hoy hacemos una promesa y dedicación delante de Dios y Su congregación.

Tal como nos exhorta en su palabra (Deuteronomio 6:4-7):

⁴ Escucha, Israel: El Señor nuestro Dios es el único Señor. ⁵ Ama al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón y con toda tu alma y con todas tus fuerzas. ⁶ Grábate en el corazón estas palabras que hoy te mando. ⁷ Incúlcaselas continuamente a tus hijos. Háblales de ellas cuando estés en tu casa y cuando vayas por el camino, cuando te acuestes y cuando te levantes.

No estamos solos. Tenemos un ejemplo a seguir, nuestros pastores.

Los Pastores Fermin y Anabel nos guiaran en conocer el plan de Dios. Oraremos por ellos tal como ellos oran por nosotros. Ellos nos mostraran como utilizar la sabiduría de Dios para vivir honradamente y en integridad. Ellos han sacrificado mucho y nosotros haremos igual por ti. Y sobre todas las cosas, seremos feliz y viviremos en gozo tal como lo hacen ellos.

Hoy nos embarcamos en un nuevo caminar tu, Alesso, Bethssy y yo. Juntos tomados de la mano de Dios cumpliremos Sus promesas. Mi oración por ti es que conozcas a Dios tu Creador; que lleves una relación con El. Pasaras altos y bajos pero Dios es fiel y nunca te dejara y de tu lado no se separara. Oro para que algún día puedas mirar hacia atrás y reflexionar sobre estas palabras y valores las bendiciones de Dios. Pon tu mirada al cielo y fija tu corazón, tu alma y todas tu fueras en Jesucristo. Que Él te guíe y llene tu vida con amor eterno, gracia celestial y gozo implacable.

No estas sola. Tienes un ejemplo a seguir, Jesucristo!

 

Fernando Puron | Un Legado Que Continua Impactando Vidas

Hoy, hace exactamente 5 años conocí a Fernando Puron Johnston. Y hoy, 5 años después, quiero compartir el impacto que sigue teniendo Fernando en mi vida.

Domingo, 30 de junio del 2013, mi novia Bethssy y yo andábamos por las calles de Piedras Negras paseando cuando nos encontramos en un crucero a un grupo de simpatizantes Priistas. Nos estacionamos en un OXXO y Bethssy aprovechó para saludar algunos conocidos de ella. Entre el grupo estaba Fernando Puron. Fue ahí cuando Bethssy me presento por primera vez a quien andaba de candidato para alcalde de Piedras Negras. De inmediato me trato como un amigo y típico de Fernando, dijo sus chistes y bromas que causaron gracia. Entre risas y carcajadas me decía, “ya llevatela de Piedras Negras” refiriéndose a Bethssy.

Durante mi noviazgo con Bethssy, cada fin de semana yo acostumbraba viajar de Del Rio, Texas a Piedras Negras, Coahuila. Remanentes de la ola de violencia aun estaban vivas por el norte de Coahuila, y su mayor concentración era en Piedras Negras. Mis amistades y familia me aconsejaban que no viajara a Piedras Negras y mucho menos en mi carro Cadillac. Contra los consejos de todos, me atreví a viajar por primera vez depositando toda mi confianza y seguridad en Bethssy. Ya estando en Piedras Negras, de inmediato vi que ni yo ni mi carro corríamos ningún riesgo. Modelos mas nuevos y marcas lujosas rondaban las calles de Piedras Negras con toda tranquilidad.

Los viajes a Piedras Negras continuaron, ya después de perder el miedo. Cada fin de semana conocía mas gente y disfrutaba de un ambiente amigable, uno que no había vivido antes. Después vinieron los eventos inolvidables como El Festival del Nacho, El Bike Fest, El Dia del Taco y sin faltar El 16 de Septiembre; eventos que año tras año nos hacíamos presentes.

Algo increíble sucedió de tanto viajar a Piedras Negras. Antes de eso, yo no conocía mucho de México a pesar de que mis padres son Mexicanos y visitábamos familia en Cuatrocienegas y Muzquiz Coahuila. Esos municipios definían lo que para mi era México. Sin embargo, en Piedras Negras descubrí que México era mucho mas. Se despertó en mi un afecto por México, su gente, su cultura y su tierra.

He sido critico de México por su crimen y corrupción. Pero platicando con Bethssy, ella se dio cuenta que mi versión de México estaba muy limitada y giraba en la imagen de Acuña. Me retó a viajar por México, para descubrir su belleza, sus tradiciones y su historia.

El reto fue aceptado y hasta el día de hoy, hemos viajado a la Ciudad de Mexico, Monterrey, Nuevo Leon;  Guadalajara y Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco. Aun nos faltan mucho por recorrer y lo haremos en cuanto el tiempo nos permita.

Viajar a la Ciudad de México fue inolvidable! En una semana pudimos andar por Coyoacan, subir las piramedes de Teotihuacan, estar frente a frente con el Ángel de la Independencia, conocer el estadio Azteca, estar en la Casa Azul donde vivieron Frida Kahlo y Diego y mucho mas.

En México conocí grandes personajes, entre ellos personal de los Derechos Humanos, Bernardo Ruiz, director y productor, Alfredo Corchado, autor y periodista, a Jimena Marti Haik y su esposo,  y a Saul Hernandez entre tantos mas. Nos presentamos en el Cine Tonala en el corazón de la cuidad. Era la premier del documental “Kingdom of Shadows” (Lo Que Reina en Las Sombras), segundo documental en el cual participo.

En Monterrey, me tocó vivir mi primer “Pa’l Norte”. Fue una experiencia inolvidable y que cada año le pido a amistades y familia que vayan y vivan la experiencia. Hacer el recorrido por Santa Lucia al lado de mi novia fue una aventura muy romántica que ya hemos regresado con nuestro hijo Alesso para que el disfrute de esa belleza natural.

La arena, las caídas del sol, la playas y su Malecón hicieron de nuestra estancia en Puerto Vallarta muy rica y memorable. Pudimos festejar el primer año de Alesso en una de las playas mas visitadas en todo México. Una semana en Puerto Vallarta no fue suficiente para disfrutar todo lo que la ciudad ofrece. Quedamos pendientes en regresar a esta playa y otras mas que aun no conozco.

Y que se puede decir de Guadalajara, la segunda ciudad mas habitada; sus mariachis, su arquitectura, su cultura y su comida! Nos dimos la vuelta al rancho Los 3 Potrillos para ver al Charro de México, al señor Vicente Fernandez.

No cabe duda que el mejor retó que he tomado ha sido viajar y descubrir el México de mis padres, al México que se le canta “lindo y querido.” Le debo estas experiencias tan ricas a la madre de nuestros hijos Alesso y Aleika, a quien como novios me invito a conocer “el otro México”, a mi ahora esposa, Bethssy H. Cabello.

Indirectamente le debo estas experiencias a quien vivió para cambiar la imagen de Mexico, de Coahuila y de Piedras Negras. El fue y es el héroe de quien habla Anthony Bourdain, el héroe que no acepta lo peor de México, sino que luchaba contra la corriente para cambiarlo. El es Fernando Puron Johnston, quien cada vez que viajábamos a Piedras Negras nos recibía con los brazos abiertos.

El día del debate lo escuchábamos hablar tal y como es Fernando, directo y sin pelos en la lengua. Hizo un contraste muy claro entre un político y un servidor publico. Y luego de repente llega la noticia que nos dejó consternados. El vídeo del asesinato se hizo viral y la noticia se hizo saber a nivel internacional. Todas las publicaciones mas reconocidas cubrieron la vergonzosa noticia de México (CBS, CNN, The Guardian, Mirror.co.uk , Daily Mail, FOX News y Xinhua entre muchos mas).

No se sabe que le guardaba el futuro a Fernando, quizá gobernador de Coahuila, pero desde su asesinato, Fernando a hecho mucho mas de muerto que algunos políticos vivos. Su muerte no fue en vano. Fernando continua impactando vidas hasta el día de hoy, yo soy testigo de eso. Con su muerte, Fernando llamó la atención internacional a México. A México no le queda otra mas que limpiar su imagen y el primer paso es traer la justicia a los asesinos de Fernando.

En Memoriam: No podíamos faltar al funeral de Fernando para despedirlo con gran honor y respeto. El fue y sera un amigo, un padre, hijo, hermano, esposo y ex-alcalde de Piedras Negras. Le rindieron un tributo tal y como se le merecía porque Fernando fue y sera el tipo de héroe que México necesita.

Muchas gracias Fernando, por abrirme los ojos al otro México, por despertar en mi el orgullo Mexicano y por convencerme de llevarme a Bethssy de Piedras Negras. Descansa en Paz, amigo.

Ejecutan a Fernando Puron en Piedras Negras

Justo cuando el estado de Coahuila y sus fronteras, Piedras Negras y Acuña, vivían una hola de tranquilidad y paz, asesinan a Fernando Puron Johnston, exalcalde priista de Piedras Negras y candidato a la diputación federal por el Distrito 1 en Coahuila.

La prensa Mexicana y estadounidense ya cubrió la noticia que tiene a todo Coahuila y México consternado. Cabe mencionar que Fernando fue duro y directo contra el crimen organizado, tanto que en el 2016 fue amenazado de muerte y hoy, dos años después, se cumple esa amenaza.

“Chingas a tu madre Purón, en dos años te vamos a mochar la cabeza”

Me dueles México, porque prefieres la muerte en vez de la vida.

Me dueles México, porque siendo un país rico, prefieres la miseria.

Me dueles México, porque te controlan el poder, la corrupción y la avaricia en vez de la justicia, la democracia y la libertad.

Me dueles México, porque en vez de apoyar a jóvenes talentosos que hablan con la verdad, los callas a balazos.

Me dueles México, porque tu reputación en vez de ir en aumento, cada día es peor.

Me dueles México, porque en vez de dar orgullo, das vergüenza y pena.

Me dueles México, porque hoy le quitas la vida a Fernando Puron, un hijo, esposo, padre de familia y amigo de muchos.

Muchas gracias Fernando por tu amistad, por los recuerdos y por la vida ejemplar que nos dejas. Eres y seras recordado como un alcalde de Piedras Negras que hizo mucho bien por su ciudad. Le extendemos nuestro mas sentido pésame a tu madre, esposa y familia.

An Open Letter to my Son, On Birthdays

Alesso, birthdays are a reminder of death.

With each passing day, I am reminded that life on earth has its limits. Once a year, we observe the day in which the world welcomed us.

Our loved ones take time out of their busy schedule to congratulate us for another year of life, happiness, and goodwill.

But on matters of the finite, the earthly, and death, we would be guilty of dishonoring Him who transcends our earthly limits.

You see, reason leads us to believe that for the finite, there must be the infinite; for the earthly, there must be the heavenly; and, for death, there must be life.

He, who transcends all and is the author of Life, is He who fills our hearts with gratitude to draw us near unto Him.

That which enslaves and traps us is a clear indicator of our eternal need for God. It is the means to draw us to the recognition of our own finitude and to the rescuing grace of God.

And so, Alesso, every year when your birthday approaches, seek solitude and draw near unto God. Your birthday will remind you that you are aging, of those that have come and gone, and that life on earth has many limits.

But rejoice and be joyful, for God always steps in and says, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.”

Today, your daddy turns 41 years old. He feels young in soul, and eternal in spirit. I have sought God’s presence and in solitude I have thanked Him for the many blessings He has bestowed upon me. In His graciousness, He has forgiven me just as you are forgiven. I am grateful beyond measure, but above all, I am joyful that His eternal Son lives within me.

Alesso, birthdays are a reminder of eternal life.

Piedras Negras: Escena de Asesinato sin Justicia

Han transcurrido tres semanas desde el triple asesinato en Piedras Negras. Entre los asesinados estaba Jorge “Copetes” Hernández. Hasta la fecha, la “supuesta investigación” sigue sin pistas.

En una entrevista a medios de comunicación local, Rigoberto Rodríguez Ríos, delegado de la Región Norte 1 de la PGJE, publicó muy pocos detalles del triple homicidio. Es desalentador oír a un delegado ofrecer tan poca esperanza en la investigación.

¿Dónde está el ultraje?

¿Dónde está la ira?

¿Dónde está la ley?

¿Dónde está la justicia?

¿Dónde está la verdadera autoridad?

Hasta el momento en 2017, al menos 7 homicidios se han registrado en Piedras Negras, sin que se hayan producido investigaciones en cada uno de estos casos.

También han habido 14 ataques violentos a las empresas. Fernando Purón Johnston, alcalde de Piedras Negras del partido PRI, reconoció que la cifra es menor que en años anteriores. Pero, ¿por qué debería haber asaltos? No debe haber un solo asalto. Y si hay uno, los ciudadanos deben sentirse confiados en sus autoridades locales para resolver el problema. Pero desafortunadamente, ese no es el caso.

Jorge “El Copetes” era bien conocido en la ciudad. Los medios de comunicación locales han cubierto ampliamente su asesinato. Los otros seis asesinatos en Piedras Negras también han sido mencionados. Sin embargo, las autoridades locales, incluido el alcalde, han sido muy frías sobre el tema.

La noticia del triple homicidio llamó la atención de la prensa estadounidense. La nota apareció en la página web de Breitbart.

PIEDRAS NEGRAS, Coahuila — Autoridades estatales en esta ciudad continúan investigando un secuestro fallido que se convirtió en un triple homicidio afuera de un deshuesadero en esta ciudad fronteriza. Mientras que medios locales afirmaron que fue un ajuste de cuentas, familiares de las víctimas han afirmado que el caso fue un secuestro fallido.

Finalmente, se preguntó al alcalde sobre los asesinatos y ofreció una respuesta insultante y condenatoria. Con un amplio alcance, culpó a la delincuencia organizada y al cártel de los Zetas por los asesinatos, el mismo cártel que una vez afirmó haber eliminado de Piedras Negras.

Atribuye este incremento a las frecuentes previas a la realización del “Centro de Reintegración Social”, así como a la difícil situación económica generada por el aumento de la gasolina y otros aumentos.

¿Cómo puede cada homicidio estar sujeto al crimen organizado cuando las investigaciones no tienen pistas?

¿El alcalde sabe algo que las madres afligidas no saben?

¿Cómo puede usted culpar a todas las víctimas tan ferozmente de que estuvieran involucrados con carteles de la droga o los acusaran de ser consumidores de drogas?

¿El alcalde confía en que todos los elementos de Fuerza Coahuila actúen de acuerdo con la ley?

PIEDRAS NEGRAS, Coahuila — Mexican authorities are investigating some members of the Fuerza Coahuila police unit in connection with the beating of an apparently innocent man during a kidnapping investigation.

¿Qué tal comenzar algunas de las investigaciones con los abusos de ese departamento y el de otras fuerzas del orden?

Si ni la PGJE ni el alcalde pueden solucionar este asesinato, ¿a quién pueden las familias en duelo escalar el asunto?

Las familias afligidas han perdido la fe en la justicia, su alcalde y las autoridades locales. Son limitados en recursos y no tienen otra opción que confiar en Dios y continuar sus vidas al máximo de su capacidad.

Está claro que las autoridades locales y los funcionarios gubernamentales no tienen una respuesta al aumento de la delincuencia y la violencia. Mi consejo a los ciudadanos de las ciudades fronterizas de México es prepararse para más violencia y delincuencia. Deben armarse y defenderse porque su gobierno y la policía local no lo harán.

En los Estados Unidos, estamos protegidos por la Segunda Enmienda, que dice: “Una milicia bien regulada, necesaria para la seguridad de un Estado libre, el derecho del pueblo a mantener y llevar armas, no será infringido”.

Coahuila se ha convertido en un narco-estado. Sus ciudadanos no están libres de funcionarios gubernamentales corruptos. La aplicación de la ley está sesgada hacia los privilegiados, pero violenta y abusiva hacia los menos afortunados. Se han reportado muchos casos de agentes de la ley que cometen delitos, extorsión y asesinato. Y luego hay muchos otros casos que no han sido denunciados por temor a las repercusiones.

Mientras tanto, para aquellos ciudadanos estadounidenses que viven en los Estados Unidos, no tienen otra opción que permanecer lejos de México, especialmente las ciudades fronterizas que han construido un muro de secuestro, extorsion, y muerte.

Piedras Negras: Murder Scene Without Justice

Three weeks have passed since the triple murder in Piedras Negras. Among the murdered was  Jorge “Copetes” Hernández. To date, the “alleged investigation” remains without any leads.

In an interview to local media, Rigoberto Rodriguez Rios, delegate of the PGJE Region Norte 1, released very few details of the triple homicide. It is disheartening to hear a delegate offer so little hope into the investigation.

Where is the outrage?

Where is the anger?

Where is the law?

Where is justice?

Where is the true authority?

So far in 2017, at least 7 homicides have been registered in Piedras Negras, without any investigations having resulted in each of these cases.

There have also been 14 violent assaults to businesses. Fernando Puron Johnston, the mayor of Piedras Negras from the PRI party,  acknowledged that the figure is lower than in previous years. But why should there be any assaults? There should not be a single assault. And if there is one, citizens should feel confident in their local authorities to resolve the mattter. But unfortunately, that’s not the case.

Jorge “El Copetes” was well known in the city. Local media have covered his murder widely. The other six murders in Piedras Negras have also been mentioned. However, local authorities, including the mayor, have been very cold about the issue.

Finally, the mayor was asked about the killings and offered an insulting and condemnatory response. With a wide scope, he blamed organized crime and the Zetas cartel for the killings, the same cartel that he once claimed to have eliminated from Piedras Negras.

He attributed this increase to the frequent pre-releases that are being carried out in the “Social Reintegration Center”, as well as to the difficult economic situation generated by the increase of gasoline and other increases.

How can each homicide be subject to organized crime when investigations have no leads?

Does the mayor know something that grieving mothers do not know?

How can you blame all the victims so fiercely that they were involved with drug cartels or accuse them of being drug users?

Does the mayor trust all elements of Fuerza Coahuila to be acting in accordance to the law?

How about starting some of the investigations with the abuses of that department and that of other law enforcement?

If neither the PGJE nor the mayor can solve this murder, who can the families in mourning escalate the matter to?

The afflicted families have lost faith in justice, their mayor and local authorities. They are limited in resources and have no choice but to trust in God and continue their lives to the best of their ability.

It is clear that local authorities and government officials do not have a response to the increase in crime and violence. My advice to the citizens of the border cities in Mexico is to prepare for more violence and crime. They must arm themselves and defend themselves because their government and the local police will not do so.

In the United States, we are protected my our Second Amendment, which states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Coahuila has become a narco-state. Its citizens are not free from corrupt government officials. Law enforcement is biased towards the wealthy, but violent and abusive towards the less fortunate. Many cases have been reported of law enforcement officers committing crime, extortion, and murder. And then are many other cases that have gone unreported for fear of repercussions.

Meanwhile, for those of us who are U.S. citizens living in the United States, we have no choice but to stay away from Mexico, especially the border cities that are building a wall of threats, violence, and death.

May Mexico one day be safe again!

Wednesday, February 1, 2017, my wife and I headed out to dinner. We have made it a custom to go out and have dinner every first of the month. It is a habit we developed after marrying on August 1st. It serves as a reminder of the commitment we both made to love and care for each other.

As we were in the middle of our lovely date, my wife received a phone call. It is that call you know something went terribly wrong simply by the reactions made. Sure enough, as soon as my wife hung up, she shared what little I didn’t already assume.

My wife’s brother had been assassinated along with two of his workers. My wife is the only girl among four brothers, the youngest of which has just been murdered. The details, motive, and assailants was not known.

My brother-in-law was 28 years old. He owned a junkyard. He bought vehicles and dismantled them to sell usable parts. His lifestyle was known to be somewhat flashy; his clothes were popular name brands, drove a sports car, was part of motorcycle club, and entertaining himself fighting cocks. From a distance, he appeared to be living a prosperous lifestyle, perhaps the reason why he was targeted.

By Friday, February 3, the details were becoming more evident. My brother-in-law was followed by two vehicles to his residence. Witnesses have testified that several men tried to kidnap him. He was being forced into a vehicle. However, two of his workers from the junkyard came to his defense. That’s when it’s believed things turned deadly. What was meant to be a “kidnap for ransom” turned into a homicide.

Jorge “Copetes” Rosales, along with two workers, were shot dead. Once the assailants realized they were not going to be able to kidnap Jorge, they shot all three of them and fled.

Fast forward to Saturday to the funeral home. A cousin who I will leave unnamed, wanted to visit and join us at the funeral home. The hours passed and my cousin didn’t show up at the time she had stated. Late into the day, she finally arrived at the funeral home.

She apologized for being late and went on to give her reason. What she shared confirmed my suspicion.

Her father-in-law had gone through a kidnapping attempt hours earlier, but managed to escape. As he was going to his residence, a pickup had followed him. Once he was in his drive way, a pickup drove right behind him and blocked the exit. Three men ran to him and tried getting him off his vehicle and onto their pickup.

My cousin’s father-in-law managed to hold on to the steering wheel while fighting off the assailants. During the fighting, the father-in-law managed to get a hold of a handgun from one of the kidnappers. He attempted shooting one of them, but the gun didn’t go off.

Finally, after about 15 minutes of back and forth, the driver of the pickup got off. He stopped the fighting and negotiated a stand down. My cousin’s father-in-law, with arm in hand, demanded the men to identify themselves and questioned their motive.

The assailants confessed to being local police who were checking the ownership of the vehicle. They proceeded to go through “customary routine” and left. My cousin’s father-in-law took matters to the authorities.

We have two separate incidents, but the same modus operandi.

Is it local police kidnapping and extorting its citizenry?

Who are they targeting? Why?

Where is justice?

Where is the media?

Who is safe?

When will family members demand answers?

Saturday evening, it is time for the final farewell. The streets of Piedras Negras come to a halt as three hearses lead a long trail of grieving family members and friends. As they are headed to the cemetery, they make one final stop in front of the junkyard before the three bodies are laid to eternal rest.

And so, life in Mexico continues as usual; its government is corrupt, its institutions are poorly administered, the poor will remain poor, the untouchable rich remain nonchalant, justice is non-existent, and yet they are all up in arms about the policies of a foreign country and its newly elected president.

MEXICO CITY — As President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office Friday, a recent newspaper headline here summed up the weariness among Mexicans and many Texas border residents: Peso stresses over Trump.

An anxious nation and border in near-panic mode await Trump, with many here pinning hopes on  Texas and other states to stand up for their neighbor with a reminder: economic integration —largely through the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA — has been mutually beneficial.

No other state is bigger, more economically and culturally tied to Mexico than Texas, so much so that some half joke that messing with Mexico and its peso, which has fallen to its weakest level in two decades, is akin to messing with Texas. There’s a Don’t Mess with “Mexas,” sign in Austin, one that Mexican Consul General Carlos Gonzalez Gutierrez says is key for Mexico’s own survival.

“We expect Texas to step up to the plate and stand up for Mexico,” said Gonzalez Gutierrez during a break from a recent meeting among foreign diplomats in Mexico City that turned into a strategy session on how to deal with challenges ahead under Trump. “Texas is caught in the middle between rhetoric and reality. In the end, we expect Texas to look at its own bottom line and do what is good for the state. Texas is the big winner with NAFTA and will be the big winner with energy reform. The most natural thing to expect is that Texans will be the natural partners in protecting NAFTA and Mexico.”

For more than 30 years, and at the behest of U.S. leaders, Mexico transformed its economy to one of the most open economies in the world. In fact, Mexico has largely built its economy around NAFTA, relying on the United States for more than one-third of its jobs, many of them poorly paid, but enough to help slow down the flow of illegal immigration to the United States to historic lows. Republican-led Texas has been the biggest beneficiary of that trade policy.

Nearly 5 million jobs in the United States depend on trade with Mexico. About half a million jobs in Texas depend on exports to Mexico. Texas exports close to $100 billion in goods to Mexico, almost 40 percent of its total exports. Border communities from El Paso to Brownsville, seaports like Houston, Galveston, and cities along the Interstate 35 corridor have benefited, according to a report by the Dallas Federal Reserve Board.

“Our Texas economy clearly relies heavily on Mexico, and this relationship is only going to deepen as Mexico opens its oil and natural gas development to Texas companies,” said Ricardo Ainslie, director of the Mexico Center at the University of Texas. “We need policies that understand the importance of this trade to our own economic well being. We also need a stable and healthy Mexico. While the United States does not control all of these variables, a Mexico caught in an economic tailspin could mean civil unrest.”

Days ahead of Trump’s Friday inauguration, President Enrique Peña Nieto made several key moves aimed at preparing Mexico for the uncertainty that lies ahead under Trump, who has promised to deport millions of Mexicans from U.S. soil, build a “great wall” between both countries and rip apart NAFTA.

Peña Nieto named as foreign minister his longtime confidant Luis Videgaray, who has ties to Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. He replaced Mexican Ambassador Carlos Manuel Sada Solana with Geronimo Gutierrez Fernandez, a former top undersecretary. Gutierrez is head of the North American Development Bank and lives in Texas. Sada, a veteran diplomat, will be the secretary for relations with North America.

The naming of Gutierrez received high praise from Texans, including Tony Garza, the former U.S. ambassador and Texas railroad commissioner.

“Geronimo, far better than those holed up in Washington, D.C., or Mexico City, understands what’s going on in Mexico and the U.S. and what’s at stake,” said Garza, a lawyer in Mexico City who’s known and worked with Gutierrez for more than a decade. “That he’s respected for his insights and integrity on all sides of the aisle and in both countries makes him both extraordinary and an inspired selection.”

Gonzalez himself is key in Mexico’s strategy. He’s credited with turning around the relationship between California and Mexico into a model one today, and has the task of ensuring Texas remains a key ally with Mexico.

Moving forward, Peña Nieto called on his diplomats to promote Mexico’s interest “without diminishing our sovereignty and the dignity of Mexicans” and reiterated that Mexico will not pay for a wall.

Negotiating with confidence

Videgaray said Mexico will “negotiate with great confidence in ourselves, without fear, knowing how important Mexico is for the United States in economic, social, and political terms … There are voices that are already promoting a strategy of conflict, confrontations, and even insult. Others predict a shameful submission.”

Mexico, he added, will instead opt for “intelligence and dignity, opening the doors to dialogue … I want to make clear, and we would make clear in all of our dialogue … those millions of Mexicans who have migrated to find work, they are not criminals, but they are productive people, who represent in the majority of their cases the best of Mexico.”

Going after Mexico would also would hamper Trump’s promise to make America “great again” by threatening thousands of jobs on both sides of the border, and forcing Mexicans to again head north in search of greater economic opportunity.

“A strong Mexico is a trustworthy partner to generate business for Texas,” said Francisco de la Torre Galindo, Mexico’s consul general in Dallas. “A strong Mexico generates enough jobs in its own territory to stop migration to the United States.”

Businessmen like Alfredo Duarte, president and CEO of Dallas-based Taxco Produce Inc., warn that turning its back on Mexico will carry implications across all sectors. Taxco provides services to more than 1,000 local restaurants and stores in North Texas and employs more 95 people in the region.

“Mexico is very important to us in Texas,” said Duarte, a native of Mexico. “We deal so much with nostalgia products, and we consume tons of Mexican food, and also remember that most of our produce in the winter time comes from Mexico. We have this great weather in Mexico so we continue to grow mostly everything, all the time, so Mexico is very important to all the food industry.”

Mexico on edge

These days, Mexico already feels on edge with daily protests over a 20 percent gasoline and basic food increase here in the capital and in some cities, including Ciudad Juarez and Tijuana, along  the U.S. border. And a groundswell of fresh corruption scandals, recurring violence, an unpopular president a year away from elections and a slumping peso banged around with every other rabble-rousing tweet from Trump has residents questioning what Trump may do in his first 100 days in office. Others are stewing in resentment.

“If his rhetoric is half his bite, we’re screwed,” said Agustin Morales Pereira, who sells electronic goods in Mexico City’s historic center. “But that’s our fault for putting our trust in the United States and forgetting history. Why were we so ignorant?”

On the Texas-Mexico border, residents on both sides expect big changes when Trump takes office.  Some hope he will fulfill his promise of creating better jobs.

“On the U.S. side there are jobs, but it’s limited to retail, restaurants, and they’re low-paying jobs, said Auden Cabello, a Del Rio resident and a Trump supporter.

Others are concerned the border will bear the brunt of any policy changes designed to punish Mexico.

“I honestly feel President-elect Trump’s views on the border are misguided. They’re from someone who doesn’t live on the border and doesn’t know how interconnected both sides are here, the U.S. and the Mexican side,” said Scott Cutler, 65, an El Paso resident.

Yesterday I was interviewed for an article about Donald J. Trump presidency and how his policies will impact the border.

Unfortunately, I’m not very articulate. I wish I could speak as fluent as I write. Anyhow, here are some of my thoughts.

Question: How will a Trump presidency impact the border?

Overall, I believe Trump’s presidency will have a positive and far-reaching impact on the border by stressing the importance of strengthening security.

We all know the current situation. The escalation of violence has impacted both sides of the border, thus weakening commerce. Continuous violent criminal activity throughout the day has affected our way of life.

On the U.S. side, crime has risen, tourism is decreasing, high paying jobs have been exported and quality education is becoming obsolete. English is spoken about 50 percent of the time and hopelessness has supplanted faith.

On the Mexican side, there is despair. Violence has quieted in some areas, but that’s because it has moved into urban areas and the U.S. Maquiladoras keep Mexicans employed, but at oppressive wages that make it difficult to survive. Tourism is dead and businesses open then shut down a few months later.

Initially, border cities will face economic hardships as they face changes implemented by a Trump Administration. However, the long term effect on the border will be financially prosperous, peacefully secure, and flourishing with tourism.

Question: Why is a wall good for both countries?

The wall is good for both countries in a symbolic way.

The U.S. and Mexico have become so dependent and intertwined that both countries have become a watered down version of each other. Purity is gone!

The wall, as a symbol, will remind both nations what makes them unique and rich.

Gone are the days when one longed to visit Mexico because of its culture, food, music and hospitality. Now, you can find a Taco Truck on every corner in the US. Its music can be heard across the neighborhood on any given Saturday, and the footprint of its hospitality and great workmanship is unmistakable on just about everything.

The wall will be a symbolic reminder that one country speaks English and the other Spanish.

The wall will be a symbolic reminder that security, laws, and justice will be respected.

The wall will be a symbolic reminder that fleeing a country will not create opportunities for a better life.

The wall will be a symbolic reminder that we are different, but our differences will unite us and make us stronger.

FBI, DEA looking to curb Heroin Epidemic through Documentary

Last month the FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) screened a documentary entitled, “Chasing the Dragon,” at the International Center for Trade in Eagle Pass. The film chronicled the recent experiences of individuals addicted to opiates and the devastating effects of the drugs.

It was shown to regional community officials and media.

“Today, we’re holding a screening of the film, ‘Chasing the Dragon.’ This film presents information about the use and abuse of prescription opiates, which can possibly lead a person into heroin use and abuse,” said DEA Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) of the Laredo district office, James Reed.

The term “chasing the dragon” refers to the elusive first time potent high from heroin or other opiates.

A female subject in the film poignantly described her first time using opiates.

“Instead of taking one, I took two, because I didn’t know what they were and took the two, had a glass of wine, and all of a sudden it just triggered something in my brain. I’d say that I became addicted that day.”

A male addict said he took them just for fun not out of emotional distress.

“I just liked the feeling of certain things; being high. It wasn’t like I’m depressed I’m going to this to make me feel better. It was kind of like, ‘I’m feeling good. I’m going to try this to see if I can feel even more better.’”

FBI Special Agent Robert Saale said that opiates don’t discriminate and the burgeoning national pandemic isn’t just a law enforcement problem.

Growing Epidemic

“This epidemic is rapidly spreading throughout the country and it transcends social and economic backgrounds…the thing I’d really like to emphasize is this is not a problem we’re going to be able to arrest our way out of. This is going to take a whole ­of­ society approach to defeat this epidemic: law enforcement; doctors; social workers; teachers; and most importantly, parents. The key to this problem is stopping it before it begins.”

Licensed chemical dependency counselor, Carlos Briseno of the Rural Border Intervention program, which offers free services in Uvalde, Carrizo Springs, Eagle Pass and Del Rio, said “Chasing the Dragon” struck a nerve.

“This documentary really took me back, because back in 2010, 2011 I had over 10 kids pass away because of heroin abuse. I was really having a hard time because when you dedicate your life to this it’s kind of hard just to walk away. I still remember every name and every face and every family. And I get to see a lot of families that are really suffering and don’t know what to do or where to go.”

The FBI and DEA created the film to help students better understand the great peril that accompanies the use of opiates and educate them before addiction becomes a reality.

According to the film’s discussion guide, “approximately one in five high school seniors report misusing prescription drugs at least once in their lifetime.”

The guide also reported that in the 1960’s 80 percent of opiate abusers became hooked on heroin before prescription medications. In the 2000’s, the converse has become the trend.

Prescription Drugs

“What do Elvis, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Prince and so many other celebrities have in common? Like so many people, they were addicted to legally prescribed medication. Prescription medications kill more people than heroin, meth, cocaine and marijuana combined,” wrote local prison sentence reform advocate and former federal inmate, Auden Cabello, in a text to the Del Rio News­-Herald. “The real gateway drug to hard drugs is not marijuana; it’s prescribed medication.”

Del Rio Chief of Police, Waylon Bullard, who was in attendance at the screening, said it is an issue that needs to be addressed by everyone.

“I agree with everybody that it needs to be seen in the schools. We need to start educating the children, maybe junior high level, seventh and eighth ­grade. We all have to work together. It’s not just a police issue like one of them said. It’s a community issue. We have to get all the teachers and parents and everybody in the community involved in this thing if we want to win it.”
